In case you haven’t noticed, there is a lot of ugliness in this world. It’s not hard to spot. Darkness lurks all around us, all the time. Hiding in the shadows–ready to pounce; ready to devour; ready to enshroud and ensnare souls with hopelessness.
It would be easy to become overwhelmed by the darkness; by the ugliness. But there is a weapon that always overcomes darkness … light. And there is an antidote to ugliness … beauty. The more darkness and ugliness I see in the world–the more I am compelled to fix my eyes and heart on the beauty of heaven; on the glory of the One who himself personifies beauty and light. Just one glimpse–one real glimpse–of him and the temporary ugliness of this world to fades into oblivion where it belongs.
So I’ve been purposing to meditate on beauty. His beauty. His ways stand in such stark contrast to the ways of the world and I’m so very glad. Although my words can never truly describe his dazzling excellence–sometimes I feel compelled to try. This is one of those times. I didn’t intend to write a poem, but that’s how the words started to come out so I didn’t bother to fight it. Certainly not the beautiful tribute he is worthy of, but when my words fail I am so very comforted to know he hears my heart …Beautiful One … You’ve captured me with kindness By your lovely mysterious ways Majestic glimpses of glory Woo my heart to seek your face Beautiful One … Drawn by the depths of your mercy I melt into arms of grace Ruined for anything less Than the beauty of your gaze Beautiful One … In a world filled with darkness Your love shines brilliant and bright Never a shadow or blemish Only unfathomable, glorious light Beautiful One … Forever and always faithful Eternally steadfast and kind When my eyes are fixed on you Beauty transforms my life Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. –Col.3:1-4 One thing I ask of the LORD, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to seek him in his temple. –Psalm 27:4
