They met their senior year of high school. They became friends. They went to Senior Prom together. They walked together at graduation.
Then life happened.
She moved down south where she met and married the man who became the father of her children. The man she thought would love her forever. The man she planned to grow old with.
But it didn’t work out that way.
Meanwhile, her prom date still pined for her. She didn’t know. He didn’t tell. He went off to Viet Nam and fought valiantly for our country. He came back changed. Viet Nam did that to people. He finally married. He had a daughter. He planned to settle down.
But it didn’t work out that way.
Time passed. Robin longed for a life partner. God told her, “Be patient, I’m getting him ready.”
“Patience” became many years.
Stephen had his own journey. After dealing with the scars of Viet Nam on his own for many years, he realized he was being pursued by the One—the only One—who could truly bring healing. God was getting him ready.
Nearly 40 years passed since the prom. As their 40-year High School reunion approached, a message board was set up as a place for alumni to reconnect. And reconnect they did! First on the message board, then through email. Email led to phone calls. Phone calls led to a reunion … at the reunion.
The rest, as they say, is history. Really, it’s His-story. His story in their lives. My friend Rob (who officiated at the wedding), said their story is one of both of patience and providence. Patience having its perfect work in them … and God’s providence working all things together for them.
Right on time.
I suppose you could look at it as time lost. I prefer to think of it as love found.
Right on time.
What are you waiting for?
Be patient … God is getting everything ready. He’s weaving together the pieces–he’s writing His story in your life. Patience is at work. So is providence.
“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens” (Ecc.3:1).
… And it’s always right on time.
Congratulations Robin and Steve! Wishing you many years of love and joy!
A great telling of a great story. Thank you, God, for rescuing beauty from our ashes. I actually thought about God as the Prom date who had been pining for me and that I can return to any time I get distracted by the world 🙂
